Our History.

An Evolving Research Network

Information, Medium & Society: The Publishing Studies Research Network was founded in 2003 with the inaugural International Conference on the Future of the Book. Since its founding the Research Network has expanded its scope in two phases. The first in 2009 when it became the Books, Publishing, and Libraries Research Network, looking beyond the book as the primary site of investigation. In 2019 the network underwent another change, to become Information, Medium & Society - The Publishing Studies Research Network, broadening its scope to explore the nature, role and purpose of publishing in society.

Conference

Information, Medium & Society: International Conference on Publishing Studies is a forum to present and discuss investigations on the nature and forms of information, and publishing practices as distinctive modes of social knowledge and cultural production. Conference delegates include leaders in the field as well as emerging scholars, traveling to the conference from all corners of the globe and representing a broad range of disciplines and perspectives. A variety of presentation options and session types offer delegates multiple opportunities to engage, to discuss key issues in the field, and to build relationships with scholars.

Publishing

Information, Medium & Society – The Publishing Studies Research Network supports two journals: Information, Medium & Society: The Journal of Publishing Studies and The International Journal of the Book. With these publications network members can enter a social knowledge process, unlike many traditional academic publishing forums, shaped by the responsive, non-hierarchical, and constructive nature of our peer-review process. The research network also has a book imprint, publishing in print and electronic formats. As a publisher ourselves, these media allow us to be self-reflective about our own intervention and innovations in the world of publishing.

Community

Information, Medium & Society – The Publishing Studies Research Network offers several opportunities for ongoing communication among its members. Any member may upload video presentations based on scholarly work to the network YouTube channel. Quarterly email newsletters contain updates on conference and publishing activities as well as broader news of interest. Join the conversations on Facebook and Twitter, or explore our new social media platform, Scholar.
